- fast track to nowhere

Each day when you browse through your daily newspapers, you are likely to be drawn to the advertisements by various private institutions of higher learning targeting at prospective students seeking further academic or professional qualifications. Each will try to outdo the other in claiming to offer a 'faster, higher, further, etc ….' programmes. That’s fair game in the fiercely competitive and crowded marketplace of the private higher education industry.

Everyone would almost certainly profess to offer the best in certain field of study or in something they do; and prospective students could obtain a qualification with them in the shortest period. Is it possible to obtain a fast track academic/professional qualification? Of course, it is possible. But is it really possible to achieve quality with a fast track offering? Is quality consistent with speed? Is it advisable for the discerning institution to even consider offering such programmes?

The Beijing Olympics game has just ended. It is the ultimate quintessential test of quality, with its slogan ‘higher, faster, stronger’. The winning medalists do not fast track their feats. But rather through years of disciplined training, hard work and sacrifices.

We have the ways to achieve quality. Do we have the will to see it through?
